Nature Journaling Class Offerings

  • This class aims to get participants started with as little equipment as possible. We learn my favorite drawing exercises which serve the dual purpose of getting you drawing right away as well as improve your drawing if practice regularly over time. I give participants strategies to create journal illustrations using guidebooks or other reference material.

  • This class covers some of the “nitty-gritty” details about materials such as sketchbooks, drawing tools, and other equipment of nature drawing and I share my favorites. We also learn to expand the concept of nature journaling to include ways we can nature journal that do not require any drawing at all!

  • In this class I show you one of my favorite tools for illustrating my nature journal: brushes! We will focus on the concepts of shape and value and letting go attachment to the outcome. By allowing the brush to do most of the work and working with “happy accidents” we “find” loose landscapes and gesture drawings that are lively.

  • In this class participants will learn easy techniques for drawing and painting loose trees: both conifers and broad leaved; up close and in the landscape.

  • In this class we learn some fun facts about clouds and I show participants easy ways to paint and draw clouds.

  • In this class participants learn different ways to keep a phenology journal, a journal that tracks changes over time.
